We are about to begin a new unit about celebrating cultural diversity. This unit will be taught using a Storypath approach, which is an integrative curriculum based on a narrative. For this unit, students will be exploring the various cultures in their community by creating a story about parades and becoming important parade planners. They will work together to organize a parade and create floats and participants for the event. Through their character role, students will be faced with a problem where they will learn how to overcome objections to the parade route. I believe that students will really enjoy this unit because they will learn more about their classmates' culture as well as their own.
Through this unit, students will acquire the understanding that culture is a way of living, and that there are different types of cultures with unique characteristics such as language, tradition and art. As I begin this unit, I will encourage students to share about their culture with the class, and I will welcome parents and guardians to come in to share their cultural heritage. Students will also learn that parades are a way for different groups to share and celebrate their culture in a community. I hope that through teaching this unit, students will appreciate and respect the wonderful diverse cultures in their own communities. I also hope that they will gain a sense of ability and understand that they can make valuable contributions to the community.
In order to enhance your child's understanding of this unit, I have created three activities that you can do at home with your child.
If you have any questions or comments about the activities or this unit, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you for all your support and involvement, and I look forward to begin this exciting unit on cultural diversity.
